When you use our Herbal Powder formulation and you are responsible for going through the double-boil process and brewing the tea yourself, this can leave you with many questions on if you performed the process correctly or how to store the tea so it lasts its longest and doesn’t spoil. Because Essiac’s Herbal Powder is the most original and natural formulation containing only the unextracted herbs and doesn’t include alcohol or in a capsule format intended to preserve the herbs, it can be a little different to store and consume than other formulations.
Many of our customers ask if the formulation should be refrigerated after being prepared – the answer is yes, but why does it taste different after refrigeration? How long does the brewed tea last, and can I even freeze it so it lasts longer? In this FAQ blog, we go over these answers in depth to help you better understand Essiac Tea, its shelf life, and its proper storage.
Why Does Brewed Tea Taste Different After Refrigeration?
Cold changes how we taste things, this isn't unique to Essiac. Refrigeration mutes sweetness and can make bitter or earthy notes more prominent, since our taste receptors respond differently to cold liquids than to room-temperature or warm ones. The Essiac itself hasn't changed; your perception of it has, the same way a cold cup of coffee tastes different from a hot one even though nothing was added or removed. If you find the chilled taste harder to take, letting your daily dose sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes before drinking often softens that shift.
How Long Does Brewed Tea Last?
Once Essiac is brewed, it's typically good for about 14 days. A few things extend shelf life: use a clean glass container with a tight seal, keep it cold and undisturbed (not in the door, where temperature swings more), and always use a clean utensil or pour directly rather than dipping something back in repeatedly. You'll know it's turned if the smell shifts to something sour or off, or you see mold. Trust your senses over the calendar date. If you brew a large batch, freezing portions you won't use within the week is a good way to stretch it further without any loss of quality.
Can I Freeze Brewed Essiac?
Yes, freezing is actually one of the best ways to preserve brewed Essiac beyond its usual refrigerated window. Portion it into individual servings (ice cube trays or small containers work well) before freezing, so you can thaw only what you need rather than refreezing and rethawing a full batch, which can affect quality. Frozen portions generally hold well for a few months. Thaw in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature. Give it a swirl once thawed. Some settling or slight separation after freezing is normal and doesn't affect potency.

Storing brewed Essiac Herbal Tea along with performing the double-boil extraction process may seem tedious and confusing, and there may be concerns about the tea spoiling and growing mold because of its lack of preservatives. However, preparing and storing Essiac tea is much like any other home-brewed tea – it lasts about two weeks in the fridge, can easily be frozen to help preserve it longer, and extracting it for more time such as in our double-boil process provides better potency and health benefits.
Essiac may also taste different when refrigerated; however, this is nothing more than a matter of perception, just as other drinks and food tastes different when they are refrigerated versus hot. If you don’t like the taste of the tea cold from the fridge, you can easily let it sit at room temperature or even put it on the stove on the lowest setting to warm it back up before consumption. Also, always be on the lookout for sour smells or any bacterial growth and contact us if you have any questions.
